Session & Workshop Title Description

The Power of Giving Back Dave Feamster, a local business owner and advocate of philanthropy, will discuss how giving back to your community can be a true blessing for everyone involved.  Based on the famous quote, "We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give,” Dave will share some personal examples and encourage interaction and questions from the audience.
Workshop Session 1  9:00am-10:15am
1A Evaluation Evaluating programs and organizational activities are essential components in communicating your success and effectiveness to funders, donors, partners, and stakeholders.  Facilitators will discuss why evaluation is an essential nonprofit best practice, and will identify some basic evaluation strategies.  They will also discuss tips on how to get started on both programmatic and organizational evaluation activities.  Jere Thomas is a Regional Prevention Consultant with OMNI Institute.
1B Budgeting/Finances - Where's All Your Money? Sharon Knight will present a primer workshop on budgeting and finances for non-profit organizations.  This session is designed as a beginning approach to budgeting, with topics covering the types of budgets organizations need to be aware of and an overview of how to best manage finances.
1C Master the Colorado Common Grant Application & Report Find out what funders are really looking for in the Colorado Common Grant Application and Report.  This session will focus on best practices of the Common Grant Application and preparing for the new Common Grant Report, which was publicly launched in July 2009.  Sarah Fischler of the Community Resource Center and Erin Binford of the Temple Hoyne Buell Foundation will provide answers to the most common questions about the Colorado Common Grant Application to help you strengthen your proposal and increase your chances of success.
1D Advanced Financial Management Strategies Want to take your organization to a more advanced and sophisticated level of financial management?  The session, presented by Susan Steele and Julie Lerudis, is targeted to individuals with a moderate level of understanding of nonprofit financial management, and will be appropriate for executive directors, nonprofit finance staff, and board leadership. This is planned to be a primarily interactive session to give you some tips but also to answer questions you might have about your specific organization and the funders perspective as they look at your various financial reports.
1E Historic Preservation How-To Do you have a historical project in your area that you would like to preserve for present and future generations? Are you unsure where to start? Cynthia Nieb from the State Historical Fund will help you navigate the roads of historical preservation including how to gain local support, the steps to plan the project, where to seek funding, and how to successfully implement and complete your project.
Workshop Session 2  10:30am-11:30am

2B Collaboration Join Maria Fabula of the Community Resource Center to explore what it takes to develop a true collaborative partnership.  Participants will learn the structures, the pros and cons of collaborations, the benefits of the resulting synergy and the surprising opportunities which often develop to meet new and emerging community needs.
2C Hot Topics - The Non-Profit World is NOT business as usual Martin Masar, Executive Director of CBR Youth Connect, will present information on nonprofit industry trends and news, including collaborations versus consolidations, use of the social media, organizational innovation, the role of leaders (upsizing/ down-sizing/ right-sizing), the emergence of for-profits, and how the remaining survivors "might" survive.

2F Debunking Non-profit Myths Join local business leader Bob Whaley in debunking common myths related to nonprofit management.  Explore alternative corporate structures and unique partnerships that provide benefit for communities with few new resources.  Learn how to strategically position your organization to meet the needs of its constituents during tough economic times. From incorporation to budgeting to board leadership, you will gain pearls of wisdom from this seasoned executive who has 37 years of combined for-profit and nonprofit corporate experience.
Workshop Session 3  1:45pm-3:00pm

3B Myers-Briggs Leadership Style In this session, executive directors, staff members, or board members will have a unique opportunity to learn more about themselves and their leadership style.  The MBTI assessment is the most well-known and scientifically backed personality tool available today.  From developing more productive work teams to building closer families, the MBTI is a valuable methodology for anyone and any organization.  Participants will complete the MBTI online before the session and then must be present in the session to receive their results.  Note:  This session is an additional $25 to cover the assessment fee, which represents a significant price reduction from other conferences and providers.
3C Capital Campaigns: Preparing for Success Thinking about starting a capital campaign?  This workshop, led by Lisa Flores of the Gates Family Foundation, is designed to help small and large nonprofits learn to plan earlier and better, thus avoiding many costly and all too common mistakes.  The presenters will review key steps in planning and conducting a capital project and will cover critical questions every nonprofit should ask before moving forward.  It will focus on effective ways of implementing and successfully completing your capital campaign utilizing proven techniques and strategies.
3D Your Mission, State and Federal Budget Changes Do all those changes in Denver and Washington, D.C. leave your head spinning?  Join Carol Hedges of the Colorado Center for Law and Policy for a discussion relating to how state and federal policies (and changes in policies) affect specific issues and mission areas for non-profits.
3E Strategic Planning Sustainable growth for an organization is a result of planning that includes stakeholders and key personnel.  Effective planning requires a strategic process that examines critical issues from core values of the organization to implementation and evaluation of the plan.  Teri Erickson, Director of Resource Development at Otero Junior College in La Junta and Carol Nickell, Community Resource Center Executive Director, have extensive program design and implementation experience and will provide you with an overview of the core components of developing a mission-driven plan.
